Abstract

Complicated numerical models are sometimes used to analyze one-dimensional wind drift problems that incorporate depth-dependent viscosity, Coriolis effects, and quadratic bottom stress. This work describes a method for finding exact solutions of this type of problem. An exact depth-dependent steady-state solution should serve as a useful test of the accuracy and convergence of the solutions obtained by numerical methods. The method for obtaining exact solutions is illustrated with examples.
